McGill CRES CAMROL Stainless Steel Cam Followers-A Reliable Drive Solution in Highly Corrosive Environments

Published: May 21, 2026 Engineering Team

The food processing, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals, where corrosion is a big issue, the reliability of drive components directly affects how long equipment lasts and how efficient production is. Regular carbon steel cam followers often rust, get stuck, and cause frequent downtime in wet, acidic, or heavily washed environments. That’s where McGill CRES CAMROL stainless steel cam followers from Regal Rexnord come in as a strong upgrade option.

The biggest advantage is the material. These followers use 440C martensitic stainless steel for the body, rollers, and raceways. Compared to standard bearing steel, it offers much better resistance against moisture, acids, alkalis, salt spray, and frequent cleaning. It handles fish juices, blood water, detergents, and chemical media really well, basically preventing rust and seizing from the start.

The design is also well thought out. The raceways go through a special zone-hardening process — the surface stays very hard for good wear resistance and load capacity, while the core keeps enough toughness to absorb shocks. This makes it suitable for high-load and high-frequency start-stop applications without cracking easily.

Sealing is another strong point. For sizes 1 inch and above, it comes with the Lubri-Disc™+ heavy-duty seal. This advanced seal (said to be over 5 times more protective than the standard version) does a great job keeping out high-pressure wash water, corrosive liquids, and contaminants. It also helps prevent grease from leaking out, which is perfect for food plants that wash equipment constantly.

Inside, they use H1 food-grade grease that meets FDA requirements. This means even if a tiny bit leaks, it won’t contaminate products — very important for food, beverage, and pharma lines that follow strict HACCP rules.

You can also choose crowned outer diameter (Crowned OD) versions. These are more forgiving if the installation isn’t perfectly aligned, spread the load more evenly, and reduce edge stress. This helps extend the life of both the follower and the cam.

One of the best practical features is full dimensional interchangeability. They match standard CAMROL sizes exactly, so you can swap them in without changing your machine design. This saves a lot of time and retrofit costs.

Real-World Applications

In seafood processing, like fish gutting or roe extraction machines, these followers stand up well to seawater, fish fluids, and constant high-pressure rinsing. They reduce the problem of followers rusting and damaging the cam track, cutting down on repairs.

Meat and poultry lines, fruit and vegetable processing, and beverage filling equipment also benefit a lot — they resist juices, salt, and cleaning chemicals in cold, humid conditions.

Pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging machines like them because of the stainless construction and food-grade grease, which help meet cleanroom and hygiene standards. Chemical mixing, conveying systems, and high-speed packaging machinery are other good fits, especially where dust, aggressive vapors, or fast cycling is involved.

Even in marine equipment, port machinery, or outdoor agricultural machines exposed to salt spray and humidity, the CRES series provides solid performance for lighter-duty drives.

Selection Suggestions for Different Conditions

  • Food Processing (seafood, meat, fruit/veg, beverage): Go with CRES + Crowned OD + Lubri-Disc™+. These environments have heavy wash-down and corrosive fluids — this combination works best.
  • Pharma & Cosmetics: Choose versions with H1 grease. Cleanliness is critical here.
  • Chemical & Light Industrial: Good for mild acids, alkalis, or salt fog. Check load ratings carefully if duty is heavy.
  • High-Speed Packaging & Automation: Crowned OD helps with alignment at high speeds, and strong sealing keeps dust out.
  • Marine, Port, or Outdoor Ag Equipment: Excellent choice where salt and humidity are present. Standard specs often enough for lighter loads.
  • Dry, indoor, low-corrosion areas: Regular carbon steel versions are probably fine and cheaper. Only upgrade if there’s any wash-down or humidity risk.
